The airliners which only fly to Azores from mainland are TAP Portugal and Sata International. You can get a ticket for 90€, but you must do reserve now and for example came to Lajes on summer because if you want buy a ticket to fly next week you will pay about 300€, is very expensive... When you are in Lajes you only can take pictures outside the base, and we have excellents spots for that!! A thing you need to be careful is the military police, sometimes they are a little bit boring with us.

Any doubt you are free to ask.

Hi!

I'm flying to lajes in 14 day (from 8th till 12th of February) and therefore I'd like to ask You few details about spotting options at LPLA. If You can suggest me some good spoting places where I'd be able to photograph arrivals or departures just with 70-300mm lens. Secondly, is there any permition needed? I meen LPLA is a military base so if there are any problems with MP or so. I'd be also interested if there is available some list of regular arrivals and if the military guys have some (i'd call it) flight days when thay train or there is some military activity.

The american Beechcraft is used in Europe? I think it couldn't cross the atlantic Ocean, unless it flys over Island and Greenland

Thanks dragoIV84 for the comment!! Yes, the Tornados are a really great aircraft and when we hear theirs takeoff, it's something incredible... that sound, that power come off the two engines!! I am glad to see in our days RAF Tornados in Lajes!!

pippo682, for what I hear and not 100% sure, but this american Beechcraft or C12 (American designation) come from Egypt. He was there on service to Egypt Embassy. Before land in Lajes he made a short stop in Malta for refueling and depart to Torrejon where he made a night stop there. Next day arrived at Lajes for a night stop too and then goes to Canada. Now I made a research and I can not find any information for where this aircraft is based, but I think is in USA.

What Lajes has good sometimes is the cross-winds. I left only for you guys this photo of the same C130 with cross-winds with gusts around 30 Knots.

pippo, on this location, is the only place you might take pictures with ocean on background. This location is great for cross-winds!!
