XL Airways grounded as parent files for administration By Nicholas Ionides Click Here
Tour operator XL Leisure Group, the parent of in-house carrier XL Airways, has gone into administration and all flights are being cancelled with immediate effect.
The company, the operations of which are primarily UK-based but which includes divisions in France and Germany that are still operating, has been in discussions on a refinancing package. It claims to be the third-largest tour operator in the UK and has several travel brands.
A statement on the XL website says administrators were appointed by the courts early this morning for XL Leisure Group, XL Airways UK, Excel Aviation, Explorer House, Aspire Holidays, Freedom Flights, Freedom Flights (Aviation), The Really Great Holiday Co, Medlife Hotels, Travel City Flights and Kosmar Villa Holidays.
The French and German divisions of the XL Group "continue to trade as normal", however.
"The companies entered into administration having suffered as a result of volatile fuel prices, the economic downturn, and were unable to obtain further funding," the statement says.
"The Joint Administrators cannot continue trading the business and therefore all flights operated by the companies have been immediately cancelled and the aircraft grounded. Going forward, the Joint Administrators are unlikely to be able to trade the business or operate the aircraft."
XL Airways served destinations in Europe, North America and the Mediterranean region, using Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies and widebodies. It recently opted to cut long-haul routes to the Caribbean.

Incident: XL Airways A332 over Atlantic on Sep 12th 2008, diversion because airline went bankrupt By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, Sep 13th 2008 12:35Z, last updated Saturday, Sep 13th 2008 20:06Z
A XL Airways France Airbus A330-200 on behalf of XL Airways (UK), registration F-GSEU performing flight JN1133 from Orlando Sanford,FL (USA) to Manchester,EN (UK) with 262 passengers, needed to divert to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) after the UK branch of the airline, XL Airways, declared bankrupt while the airplane was over the Atlantic about 5 hours into the flight. The French flight crew told passengers, that they needed to divert becaue the license had expired and they could no longer land on UK airports.
Passengers reported, that their Manchester based cabin crew was in tears after the news broke, but continued their service professionally.
The flight reportedly was the last to takeoff around the globe before the airline went bust.
Two aircraft, reportedly paid for by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, brought the passengers from Paris to Manchester.
In a press release Ryanair offered one of their Boeing 737-800s to the CAA for the next two weeks to bring stranded XL Airways passengers back home. Many other airlines, inside and outside the UK, have offered their help to stranded XL passengers quietly and without press releases, too.

L'aereo batteva bandiera canadese.
